    “Microstructure in Al alloys”

Welcome Speech

Science Center for Material Design and Preparation at Central South University was established by Prof. Yong Du after he returned China in February, 2003. Currently, the center consists of 2 professors, 5 associate professor, 1 engineer and 60 postgraduate students. The three academicians in China (Prof. Baiyun Huang, Prof. Zhanpeng Jin and Prof. Peiyun Huang) are appointed as the academic consultants of the center.

The main research fields of the science center cover thermodynamics of phase diagram, diffusion and interfacial reaction, determination and computational simulation of materials performance, microstructural evolution simulation, application of gradient coating technology, hydrogen storage material design and its application, etc. The center has establishd the close cooperative relationships with University of Vienna (Austria), Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Thermo-Calc software company (Sweden), Montan unirersitat Leoben (Auselia), Clausthal University of Technology (Germany), Max–Planck–Institut für Eisenforschung (Germany), Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany), Aachen University (Germany),  Materials Science International Team (Germany), University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), Pennsylvania State University (USA) and Illinois Institute of Technology (USA).

The science center pays great attention to the cultivation of the students’ scientific literacy as well as their ability of studying independently. Since the establishment of this center, 12 master or doctoral candidates have been sent abroad for advanced studies based on its widely academic platform. Two doctoral candidates (Hailin Chen and Zhu Pan) and two postgraduate students (Wei Xiong and Shuhong Liu) have worked on phase diagram and crystal structure in Physical Chemistry Research Institute, University of Vienna for about 6 months in 2005 and 2006, respectively. In 2007, The Doctoral candidate (Lijun Zhang) was invited to Illinois Institute of Technology in USA to study the high-temperature calorimetry for about half a month. In 2010-2012, The Doctoral candidates (Weihua Sun, Dandan Liu and Ying Tang) were invited to Illinois Institute of Technology in USA to study the high-temperature calorimetry, respectively.

Our center not only sponsors students to attend the academic conferences at home and abroad, but also recommends students to apply for the grants from various international organizations. In May,2007, one doctoral student, Wei Xiong, took part in the First Sino-German Symposium on Computational Thermodynamics and Kinetics and their Applications to Solidification, and received the best paper award. The paper of Ph.D candidate Zhu Pan and Shuhong Liu published in "Intermetallics" won the APDIC (Alloy Phase Digram International Committe) best paper award. In June, 2008, another Ph.D. candidate, Lijun Zhang, was granted for the STT scholarship from the international Foundation for Applied Thermodynamics in order to attend the international CALPHADXXXVII conference held in Finland. In May, 2009, Ph.D candidates Jiong Wang and Aijun Wang attended the international CALPHADXXXVIII conference held in the capital of Czech,Prague. From May 23 to 28, Ph.D candidates Weihua Sun, and Peisheng Wang attended the CALPHAD XXXIX meeting, which was held in Ramada Plaza Jeju, Korea. In 2011, Ph.D candidate Biao Hu and postgraduate students Yingbiao Peng, Peng Zhou and Dan Cai was granted for the STT scholarship to attend the international CALPHAD XL conference held in Brazil. In 2012, Ph.D candidate Xiaowu Nie and postgraduate students Weibin Zhang, Ying Tang and Shaoqing Wang were granted for the STT and CALPHAD scholarships to attend the international CALPHAD XLI held in America. In 2013, Kaiming Cheng, Yaru Wang, Na Ta and Hua Zhou were granted for the STT and CALPHAD scholarships to attend the international CALPHAD XLII held in Spanish. Yuxiang Xu attended the 4th International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films held in San Diego, America. Yingbiao Peng attended the 18th Plansee-International Conference on Refractory Metals and Hard Materials hold in Austria. In 2014, Dandan Huang was granted for STT to attend the thermodynamic optimization train held in France. And Weibin Zhang attended the 10th International Conference on Hard Materials held in Mexico. Cong Zhang attend the 28th MSIT conference hole in German. Xiong Yang attended the 2014 International Aluminum Alloys Conference held in Norway.

In order to create the good scientific research environment for the outstanding undergraduate students, our science center selects a group of excellent undergraduate students to participate in our training courses of scientific researches every year. In addition, the science center also encourages the undergraduate student to be engaged in some scientific research work in their leisure time as the step platform of their future scientific research. The bachelor graduation thesises of three undergraduate students, Wei Xiong , Lijun Zhang, Xiaoming Yuan, Na Ta and Ming Wei were selected as the outstanding bachelor papers of Central South University. Over the years, nearly all the bachelor graduation thesises in this center have been published as academic papers in various international high-quality journals.

To create more successful prospects for the students in our center, we establish the close cooperative relationships with many domestic and international institutions, and do receive many acknowledgements from them. The graduates from our center are appreciated by the worldwide research institutes and companies. In 2007, Mr. Chao Zhang went to Italy doing a doctorate. In 2008, Two Ph.D. candidates, Li Chen and Wei Xiong, were admitted into Leoben University, Austria, and Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, respectively. A Ph.D. candidate, Lijun Zhang, went to Ruhr-Universität Bochum for the joint training doctoral program in May, 2009. In 2010, Mr. Bicheng Zhou went to Pennsylvania State University (USA) and started doing a doctorate while Ph.D. candidates Jingrui Zhao and Jianchuan Wang went to Clausthal University of Technology (Germany), and to Max–Planck–Institut für Eisenforschung (Germany) for their doctoral degree under the joint training doctoral program, respectively. Master graduates Zhijun Zhu (in 2008), Weiwei Zhang (in 2009), and Keke Chang (in 2010) went to Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal (Canada), Technical University of Denmark (Denmark) and Aachen University (Germany) for their doctoral degree, respectively. Doctoral graduates Zhu Pan (in 2008), Cuiyun He (in 2008), Hailin Chen (in 2009), Lijun Zhang (in 2010) and Shuhong Liu (in 2010) went to Freiberg university of mining and technology, Max-Planck Institute for Iron Research, Clausthal University of Technology, Ruhr-Universität Bochum and Aachen University in Germany for their postdoctoral research work, respectively while other two doctoral graduates Chengyin Tang (in 2008) and Wei Xiong (in 2011) went to Korea University and Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), respectively, to start their postdoctoral research work. Peisheng Wang (2012) and Weihua Sun (2013) went to Clausthal University of Technology and Ohio State University, respectively to start their postdoctoral research work. Peng Zhou (2013) and Dandan Liu (2013) went to Vienna University of Technology and University of Munster, respectively for the joint training doctoral program.

Up to now, 19 Ph.D students were graduated (one student was awarded as BAVon Humboldt and 16 students have finished their postdoctoral research work or the joint training doctoral program). Now 15 students are starting their doctoral program or the joint training doctoral program in the United States or Europe. 7 doctors studied abroad were hired as professor or associate professor and funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China.

We sincerely expected the excellent undergraduate and graduate students from the domestic universities and research institutions to join our team, displaying your own talent and composing your brilliant life!
